Alta S. Lewis, 88 of Harriman, formerly of Mountain City, TN passed away Wednesday morning, January 11, 2012. She is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Daniel H. Lewis, her parents James and Valentine Schmittou and her only sister, Jeraldine Allen. She is survived by her children Kathleen (Dr. Joe McKinney) of Chesapeake, VA and children Anna (Gary Spear) and their children Grace, Evan, Nate and Joy; Daniel (Dr. Julie Smith) McKinney; Christopher (Mel Schreiner) McKinney and son Devon; Dannise (Roger) McKinney of Harriman and son Roger II; Danny (Dr. Glenda Stout) Lewis of Elgin, IL and children Claire and Patrick; and Leslie (Rev. Gale Hartley) of Jamestown and children Tim, Asa and Dr. Aaron(Kristin Brown)Hartley. Alta grew up in Los Angeles, CA and worked for Liberty Mutual. In later years she worked in doctor's offices in Mountain City as an insurance clerk. She met her husband Daniel during World War II after he enlisted in the Navy. They were married and spent most of their 44 years in Mountain City. She was known for her sweet smile and her devotion to her husband's ministry. She was active in the churches where her husband was pastor organizing many Bible Schools, serving as WMU Director, and teaching Sunday School. She was a member of South Harriman Baptist Church at the time of her death. Alta began the first Girl Scout Troop in Mountain City, Troop 298, and is fondly remembered as a mentor to young girls in the community. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Hux Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, TN with services immediately following. Rev. Gale Hartley will officiate. Her grandsons will be her honorary pall bearers. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions may be sent to the Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes, Memorial and Honor Gifts, P.O. Box 2206, Brentwood, TN 37024-2206.
