Bernie Cowan, age 89, 1899 Hwy 91 North, Mountain City, TN passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Cowan was born in Danforth, Maine on November 29, 1924 to the late Bial W. Cowan and Maude Ragan Cowan. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Amy Cowan and a brother, Bryon Cowan. He was a member of the St. Anthonys of Padua Catholic Church. He was retired from Sarasota, Florida as a supervisor of safety. He was a United States Marine Corp. veteran having served in World War II. He had been a member of the Johnson County Honor Guard, was a life member of the VFW as well as American Legion and DAV. His hobbies included reading, ham radio, hunting and sewing. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Beryl Cowan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Michael S. Cowan, Sarasota, Florida; Patricia F. Cowan, Rochester, NY; Rita Ann Cowan, Mountain City, TN; and Timothy R. Cowan of Independence, Va. Four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one niece also survive and special friends Mike and Sharon Bursztyn. Funeral Mass will be conducted on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Anthonys of Padua Catholic Church with Father Dennis Cress officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Following the Funeral Mass the family will receive friends at the home of Ms. Louise Shoen. Honorary pallbearers are John Wayne Jeffries and Jim Borstz. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The St. Anthonys Food Pantry.
