Betty J. Cunningham, age 90 of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2025 at Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center.

A native of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, she was born on November 22, 1934 to the late Stacy Guy Thomas Sr. and Laura Effie Norris Thomas. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Cunningham Jr., three sisters: Marjorie Parker, Ilene Selfe, Alice Pickle; two brothers, Frank Thomas and Stacy Thomas Jr.

Betty loved the military life she experienced with David. Traveling and raising a family in Orlando, FL, Guam, Omaha, NE, Hawaii, and Mountain City, TN. Hawaii was her favorite place, after the mountains of East Tennessee.

Betty was pianist/organist for many church congregations, beginning at Pleasant Home Baptist Church. She played at Cobbs Creek Baptist Church and Butler Baptist Church. It was her great joy to play for church.

Betty is survived by five daughters: Joyce and husband Steve Bailey of Panama City, FL, Sharon and husband Mark Kophamer of Bristol, TN, Jean Ann and husband Doug Poore of Bristol, TN, Tammie Cornett of Mountain City, TN, Alice and husband Kenneth Johnson of Mountain City, TN; two sons: David and wife, Donna cunningham of Panama City, FL; Stacy Cunningham and Jessica Cunningham of Mountain City, TN; one sister, Nancy South of Laurel Bloomery, TN; 21 grandchildren; and 30 great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews and a host of special friends.

Betty will lie in state from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October, 28, 2025 at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home. A funeral service for Betty will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home with Reverend Dan Wood officiating. A graveside service will follow in the Acre Field Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be William Poore, Jason Cunningham, Bryan Kophamer, kevin Kophamer, Samuel Kophamer and Mark Kophamer Jr. 

Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
