Betty Chappell Steed, 86, Lakeland, TN, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 8, 2025.
Betty was of Christian faith and a member of HighlandHeights Presbyterian Church, Cordova, TN. Betty was born in Johnson County, TN to the late Oscar W. and Anna T. Brinkley Chappell. She attended East Tennessee State University where she obtained a bachelors in English and History and a Masters in Library Science. She taught in Washington County, TN schools for 32 years. She retired as Librarian from Davy Crocket High School in 2001. Betty was known for her kind, loving, caring, and humorous personality. Her departure leaves an unfillable void in the lives of those that knew her. She loved feeding the birds, reading, shopping, and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by sister Pegge Chappell Baughcum and her brother Billy Chappell Sr.
She is survived by her beloved daughters Audrey (Thornton) Cline and Andra (Cathrine) Steed; grandchildren Alex Cline and Mollie (Michael) Shield; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 24th, 2025 at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home 300 West Main Street, Mountain City, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Libre Indian School, Ashland, MT 59004.
