Dorothy Gilmer

Dorothy Marchant Gilmer (Ms. G) left her earthly home, 544 Adams Road, Mountain City, TN on Monday, June 6, 2011 to be at home with Jesus. She was born in Worchester, England, January 19, 1915 to William and Dorothy Marchant of England. At an early age "Ms. G" knew that she wanted to be a nurse, like her father and grandfather who had medical professions. After high school and nurses training she enrolled in Queen Alexander Military Nursing Service and served during World War II from 1942-1946. She was Second Lt. It was during this time that she gave her heart and life to the Lord. When the war was over, she took a nursing position as a District Nurse in Ontario, Canada. Soon after, she met and married Hector Bishop. From Canada they traveled to Kentucky and California. Later they settled in Florida. All the while she continued her nursing career. After her husband's death, she later married Jim Gilmer who had family in Kingsport, TN thus leading them to TN. They decided to settle in Laurel Bloomery. That was short lived for them as a couple since Mr. Gilmer died less than a year after they arrived here. After much thought and prayer, Ms. G decided to make Mountain City her home. Dr. John Whitlock encouraged her to come out of retirement and she began work at the Johnson County Hospital. Her last place of employment was with the Mtn. City Care Center where she was named Nurse Of The Year. Dorothy was the oldest member of the Roan Creek Baptist Church. She was a dedicated and faithful member of her church, her Sunday school class and the WMU. During her later years she continued to serve by delivering meals on wheels, worship tapes and a friendly smile to the shut ins and she was a volunteer with Hale Community Ministry. Her motto and goal has been with Gods help to see a need and find a way to meet itwhether it is physical or spiritualalways doing something for someone else. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and husbands. She is survived by four step-children: Joyce McCulloch (Bruce), Frieda Mirehouse (Dr. O.J.), Donald and bob Bishop all of Ontario, Canada. Other survivors include her best friend and caregiver, Janet Coyne; special friends Erin Stanley, Mary Reece, Sara Arnold, Teresa Moretz, caregiver Viva Sheffield, Craig and Dr. Raina Sluder; and her loving cats Mitzie and Mickey. She leaves behind countless "adopted" children and grandchildren whom she has befriended and taken into her home and life throughout the years. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Roan Creek Baptist Church, Thursday, June 9, 2011 with Rev. Dennis Wilson and Pastor David Hankal officiating. Music will be provided by Derl McCloud and Kristie Richardson. It is only fitting that Ms. G's body be taken to the Church prior to the Service where friends will be received from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. This is VBS week at the Church and one of the last opportunities of service she gave was to work with the children in VBS. After she became confined to her home, she sat on her front porch and always watched the kids play at VBS. Pallbearers will be Deacons of the Church. Honorary pallbearer will be her physician and longtime friend, Dr. John Whitlock. A Military committal service will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roan Creek Baptist Church Mission Fund. For many years Dorothy participated in church mission trips to the Upper Peninsula of MI.
