Earl Howard

January 30, 1928 — September 3, 2020

We are saddened to announce the passing of Earl Howard, age 92, on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at his residence.  Earl was born January 30, 1928 to the late Roby and Hallie Snyder Howard.  He was a member of the JCHS class of 1946. Earl was a driver for Mason Dixon for 23 years and was also a farmer. In his early years, Earl was a machinist in the Air Force and played football for the Air Force. He was a member of Shady Valley Presbyterian Church. Earl was also a member of the Taylorsville Lodge 243 F&AM, Jericho Shrine Temple of Kingsport and formerly served on the Johnson County School Board. He established the Shady Valley Water Shed and served as its first President. Earl received an award for highest corn yield in Southeastern United States for two years in a row.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Capriece Cole Howard; son, Jeff Howard; five sisters: Hazel Congdon, Hester Williams, Eula Adams, Trula Muse and Lois Ann Adams; one brother, Roby Howard, Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Erby Howard and wife, Diana of Shady Valley, TN; brother Malcolm Howard; grandchildren: Joseph Howard, Tuesday Pope and Cole Howard; great grandchildren: Briden Pope, Gavin Pope and Eleanor Jo Howard. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers: Kelly Crabtree and Monica Burgess.

A graveside will be held in Shady Valley Memorial Gardens on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Jim Graham officiating. Masonic rites to be accorded by the Taylorsville Lodge 243 F&AM followed by military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shady Valley Cranberry Festival; Olan Bentley Scholarship Fund, 423 Hwy 133, Shady Valley, TN 37688; or Shriner’s Hospital.

At other times friends may call at the residence, 527 Hwy 94, Shady Valley, TN 37688 or at the home of his son, Erby at 493 Hwy 91, Shady Valley, TN 37688.
