Edith L. Hammons

Edith Lewis Hammons, age 88, of, Mountain City, Tennessee passed peacefully from this life into her eternal life in heaven on Saturday, January 5, 2008. She was affectionately called "Grandma" by all her family and extended family.
She grew up on Leander Mountain on the Tennessee/North Carolina line among a loving family of 11 children. She had many happy childhood memories of growing up in this remote area of Johnson County when walking to their destination was a way of life, and like to relive those days in the many stories she liked to tell. She was a long-time member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church. She was happily married to Ernest Hammons for 63 years until his death in 2000. Her hobbies included growing flowers, especially roses, and quilting.
Survivors include: one daughter, Jean Chappell and husband Ed of Sanford, North Carolina; three sons: Willie D. Hammons and wife Naomi Blevins Hammons of Mountain City, Tennessee; Lynn H. Hammons and wife Sue Lewis Hammons of Gray, Tennessee; and Larry E. Hammons and wife Sharon Miller Hammons of Jonesborough, Tennessee; one sister, Vinnie Rash of Creston, North Carolina; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill Lewis and Lillie Prather Lewis. She also has several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Edith L. Hammons will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2008 from Hammons Chapel Christian Church with Mr. Mike Smith and Mr. Tom Wolfe officiating. Music will be under the direction of Todd Barnard and Jimmy Hammons. Graveside service and interment will follow in Dunn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2008 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home.
