George L. Harrell, 76, of Marshall, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at his home in Marshall, Michigan. George was born on February 22, 1938 to William A. and Anna Lue (Cobb) Harrell in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He moved to Beloit, Wisconsin in 1944 and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in 1956. While in High School George was an honor student and was elected to attend Badger Boys State at Ripon College in 1955. He was a member of the All Big 8 Football Team. George received a football scholarship to attend the University of Iowa and played in 2 Rose Bowl Football Games in Pasadena, California. He graduated in 1961 from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. George entered the U.S. Army on February of 1961 and was discharged in February of 1963. While in the Army, he was Head Coach of the Fort Leonard Wood Football Team and was Captain of the U.S.A.F. European Championship Team in 1962. He moved to Madison, Wisconsin in April of 1963 where he met and married Maline Robinson on March 28, 1966. George and Maline had two sons, Adrian and Damon Harrell. George enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Graduate School in 1966 and graduated in 1969 with a Master's Degree in Special Education. George worked at Monona Grove High School from 1969 until retiring in 1996. During his time at Monona High School he coached as the Defensive Coordinator, winning 10 Conference Championships and 2 State Football Championships in 1977 and 1984. George coached the Madison Mustang's which was a Semi-Pro Football Team from 1965 to 1970, winning the Central State Football Championship in 1968 and 1970. He was inducted into The State of Wisconsin Football Hall of Fame and The Beloit Sports Hall of Fame. George is survived by his wife, Maline Harrell, two sons, Adrian (Rebecca) Harrell, and Damon (Lisa) Harrell, four grandchildren, Henry, Lauren, Jordan, and Isaac, a brother, Jesse (Doris) Harrell, and two sisters, Betty Barnett, and Dorothy (Craig Davis) Harrell. George was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Buford Harrell, and a sister, Emma Lane Carter. Services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home 424 Prospect Street, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511
