Hazel McElyea Gregory, age 83, of 508 Brown Place, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Johnson County, Tennessee on February 19, 1921 to the late William David McElyea and Ollie Virginia Wilson McElyea. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Gregory, who passed away in 1991; one sister, Ruby Payne and one brother, Morris McElyea. Hazel was a former Deputy Register of Deeds for three years, taught public school for one year, a former Sales Clerk/Alterations for Greever and Walsh, former employee at the Ammunitions Plant of Bristol, where she also played on the Industrial Basket ball League, a member of the Neva Home Demonstration Club, a member of the Women's Missionary Society and was active in Body Recall. Hazel was also a former Sunday School Teacher at Pine Grove Baptist Church for a number of years. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Hazel is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Art and Gaye Gregory of Bristol, Virginia; one sister, Cecile Bolling of Bristol, Tennessee; one brother, Dayton McElyea of Cleveland, Ohio; one grandson, Eric Gregory of Bristol, Tennessee; one granddaughter, Sandra Vipperman and husband Dan and one great granddaughter, Paige Vipperman, all of Paducah, Kentucky. Several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services for Hazel will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Haskel Ingram and Rev. Cecil Glenn to officiate. Graveside Services and Interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 from the Mountain View Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Hazel's family. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Funeral Home, prior to Services. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 508 Brown Place, Mountain City, Tennessee 37683. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 421 W Main Street, Mountain City, Tennessee 37683 or to the Charity of your choice.
