Helen Joyce (McQueen) Hyer, 81, of Apopka, FL (formerly of Bean Station, TN), passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 12:04 a.m. after a lengthy illness.

Joyce, as everyone called her, grew up in Mountain City, TN with her sister Margaret. Both of her parents were school teachers in Johnson County and attended First Baptist Church of Mountain City.  Joyce was crowned Bean Queen in the 50’s during the Johnson County Bean Festival.  She married Charles Eugene Hyer and resided in Bean Station, TN for many years.  She enjoyed growing and canning vegetables and making jelly.  She was a caregiver to her husband, a disabled Veteran of the Korean War, and also to her father during the later years of his life.  Joyce was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt and friend.  She was a sweet, loving person who will be remembered for her caring spirit and gentle kindness.

Joyce was predeceased in death by her parents, Alfred H. McQueen and Hassie ‘Philippi’ McQueen of Mountain City, TN; her husband Charles E. Hyer of Bean Station, TN; her daughter Wanda Hyer Meredith of Clinton, TN, her daughter in law Cindy Hyer of Glen Burnie, MD; and her great granddaughter Audrey Coffey.

Joyce is survived by her son, Mike Hyer and Wife Valerie of Woodbine, MD; Grandsons Jeffrey Hyer and Nathan Hyer of Woodbine, MD; Granddaughters Melissa Coffey of Cary, N.C.; Elizabeth Blocher of Winfield, MD and Kathryn Saulsbury of Sykesville, MD; Great Granddaughters Cindy Coffey of Cary N.C. and Braelynn Blocher of Winfield, MD.

Joyce is also survived by her son, Ed Hyer of Baton Rouge, LA, Granddaughters McKenzie and Brittany, as well as Grandson Taylor, all of Central Florida.

Grandson, Justin Meredith, Wife Natasha, and Daughter Stephanie of Pigeon, TN. Step-Daughter, Sue Schultz, and Husband Robert of Rock Creek, OH, Grand-daughters Teresa Cumberledge, of Rock Creek, OH, and Nicole Schultz, of Tampa, FL..

Survivors also include Sister, Margret Tilly of Winston Salem, NC, Nieces, Yvonne Tilly Prevette of Lexington, N.C.; Lori Sloan of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and nephews Steve Tilly Sr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., Robert Everett of Lexington, NC, and Perry Tilly of Lexington, N.C.  Joyce also leaves behind numerous Grand-nieces, Grand-nephews, and beloved friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Mr. Dwayne Dickson officiating.   The family will receive friends from 11-12:00 p.m. prior to the service.  Graveside service and interment will follow from the Phillippi Cemetery.
