James C. (Jim) Hutchinson, age 90, of 176 Hutchinson Road, Shady Valley, TN and Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center died on Monday, June 13, 2016 after an extended period of declining health. He was born January 18, 1926 to the late Robert Garrett and Ada Stout Hutchinson. Jim was a member of Harmon Chapel Christian Church.
He was predeceased by his wife, Laura June Hutchinson, and is survived by his daughters: Donna Davis and husband Cliff of Williamsburg, VA; Debbie Gladwell and husband Yates of Summerfield, NC and Sherry Booher; twin sons: Barry Hutchinson and wife Kimberly of Holly Springs, NC and Brian Hutchinson and wife Melissa of Shady Valley, TN; one sister, Jane Hutchinson of Shady Valley, TN and sister-in-law, Hazel Hutchinson of Mount Morris, MI. Eight grandchildren: Adrienne Henderson, Courtney Martinez, Tyler Hutchinson, Lindsey Hutchinson, Tucker Hutchinson, Zachary Hutchinson, Emily Hutchinson and Garrett Hutchinson; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He served in the Army as a gunner in the tank battalion during World War II, deployed from 1943-1945, in the European theatre. He returned home and taught agriculture classes. For 38 years he was employed by Sperry Univac/Raytheon (1953-1991) and retired as a Senior Subcontract Administrator.
He was elected five consecutive, six-year terms to the Johnson County Magistrate 8th District from 1948 to 1978; he served as past Master of the Taylorsville Lodge 243F&AM; past President of the Shady Valley Ruritan Club; past President of the local PTA and life member of the State of Tennessee PTA; volunteered six years on the Johnson County Rescue Squad (Shady Valley unit), and he was the President of Blevins Cemetery Association for 30 years.
After several years as a member and Elder of Harmon Chapel Christian Church, he was ordained as a Minister of the Gospel on August 9, 1970, and served as Minister of Liberty Christian Church in Mountain City, TN for 35 years. He also hosted a Christian radio program on WMCT for 35 years. He has ministered to the residents of the Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center since 1985.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 6:00pm, Thursday, June 16, 2016, from Harmon Chapel Christian Church with Howard Taylor officiating with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 5:30–8:00pm at Hux-Lipford Funeral Home and again on Thursday, June 16, at 5:00pm at Harmon Chapel Christian Church prior to the funeral. Graveside service and interment will be at 11:00am, Friday, June 17, 2016, in Blevins Cemetery. At other times, friends may call at the residence of Brian and Melissa Hutchinson, 176 Hutchinson Road, Shady Valley, TN. Pallbearers will be Larry Hutchinson, Terry Hutchinson, John Cornett, Lowell Hutchinson, Huey Long, and Travis Long and. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Hutchinson, Richard Blevins and the men of Harmon Chapel Christian Church.
Jim spent his life serving his family, his community, his church, his country, and most importantly, God. Those who knew him give thanks to God for blessing our lives with such a devoted husband, extraordinary father, and loyal friend.
The family wishes to extend appreciation and gratitude to Jim’s second family at Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center for the care given to him.
