Jean Shupe Stanley, age 79, of 124 Old Mill Lane, Mountain City, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. She was a native of Johnson County and was born November 20, 1925 to the late Charles and Mary Ethie Lowe Shupe. She was preceded in death by her husband J. C. "Curley" Stanley who passed away in 1999. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Flora Payne, and three brothers: Aubrey Shupe, Kenneth Shupe and Dwight Shupe. Jean was a graduate of Johnson County High School and was retired from Sears & Roebuck mail order department. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mountain City, loved crocheting, cooking and gospel music, and volunteered for several years in Johnson County elections. Survivors include one daughter: Laurie Stanley Easley of the home; one son: Tom Stanley and wife Donna of Whiteville, NC; four sisters: Pauline Dancy, Mountain City, Opal Nethercutt and Vivian Stuart, both of VA, and Shirley Ward, Kernersville, NC; one brother: Doran Shupe, Mountain City; three grandchildren: Devin Easley, Breanna Easley, and Sydney Easley; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2004, from the First Baptist Church of Mountain City. Rev. Norman Reece and Mr. Jim Hutchinson will officiate. Graveside services will follow in the Phillippi Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday from the Henson Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the residence.
