Joel N. Vaughn

Joel N. Vaughn, age 79, of 587 Harbin Hill Estates, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Carthage, North Carolina, he was born on January 24, 1925 to the late Joel Elledge Vaughn and Mary Hollingsworth Vaughn. In addition to his parents, Joel was preceded in death by his first wife, Olwyn Vaughn, who passed away February 26, 2002. Joel was owner of Big Chief Convenience Store. He was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion. Joel was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his duties during D-Day. He also received three Bronze Stars, Bronze Arrowhead and Victory Medal. Joel was a fan of Nascar, enjoyed working in the yard and was a collector of eagle, indian and lighthouse figurines and pictures. Joel is survived by his wife, Edna Vaughn, of the home; six daughters, Jill Woodie of Bethlehem, North Carolina, Gail Cornett of Wendell, North Carolina, Karen Hall of Catawba, North Carolina, Cheryll Arnold, Melissa Sluder and Janie Reece, all of Mountain City, Tennessee; one son, Doug Yarber of Elk Park, North Carolina, fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral Services for Joel will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2004 from the Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Morefield to officiate. Military Graveside Services and Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park, Mountain City, Tennessee and will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Active Pallbearers will be: Steve Beaudet, Derek Woodie, Dennis Hall, Roy Adkins, Doug Yarber and Kevin Griffin. Honorary Pallbearers are: Dr. Buddy Clayton, Dr. Steve Beaird, Farris Thomas, Pat Greene, Doug Brewer, Ted Shores and Mike Stout. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. prior to Services at the Church. At other times, friends may call at the residence.
