John "Lee" Potter, a devoted tree farmer and beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully at his residence on September 8, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on October 16, 1941, in Potter Town, North Carolina, Lee exemplified a life dedicated to family, faith, and nurturing the natural world around him.
A loving husband for 60 wonderful years, Lee is survived by his wife, Nancy Potter, who stood by his side through all of life's seasons. He took great pride in his role as a father to his daughter, Donna Hash, who resides with her family, and to his son, John Potter, who is married to Debbie Potter and lives in Mountain City. Lee was also a cherished brother to his sister, Zella Parkinson of Earlsville, MD. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jessica Hash, Samantha Phipps, Mitchell Gentry, Keisha Gawlik, Michael Potter, Lester Hash, and Adam Walton, in addition to nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way in January. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as his special nieces, Ruth Barr and Rita Brown.
Throughout his life, Lee held an unwavering commitment to his community and his faith as a member of Laurel Springs Church. He found joy in spending time with his loved ones and creating memories that will be cherished forever. With a passion for tree farming, he nurtured not only the land but also a sense of stewardship toward nature and community.
Lee is preceded in death by his parents, Will Potter and Blanche Thomas Potter; his son, Michael Potter; his brothers, Clyde Potter and Frank Potter; and his sisters, Mary Weaver and Edith Brown.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Lee's life during the visitation on September 10, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM, both taking place at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City, Tennessee with Spencer Roark and Frank Rash officiating. A graveside service will be held the following day, September 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at West Cemetery in Creston, North Carolina.
Lee's pallbearers will include family and friends: Adam Walton, Michael Potter, David Baugeus, Doug Rash, Brandy Phipps, and Kenneth Patrick. Honorary pallbearers are the members of Laurel Springs Church.
