Karl Lee Wittmann, age 65, of 300 Furnace Creek Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away August 24, 2004 at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on August 20, 1938 to the late Lloyd C. Wittmann and Elinor Foster Wittmann. In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by a son, David Wittmann; sister, Marilyn Friddle; brother-in-law, Jerry Bullock and sister-in-law, Mary Hamis Wittmann. He attended elementary and junior high school in Dubuque and graduated in 1956 from Jamestown High School in Jamestown, North Carolina. Following graduation, Karl joined the Air Force and served from 1956 to 1965, serving in Vietnam. He was a member of the Army National Guard from 1975 - 1976. Karl was a 1970 graduate of the Triad Police Academy and a 1976 graduate of Lincoln Welding School. Karl worked as a Lieutenant with the High Point, North Carolina Fire Department and as a member of the High Point Police Department. He was also employed in the furniture and textile industries and in heavy construction as a pipe fitter, boilermaker, instrument tech and millwright. In addition, Karl worked in the nuclear industry as a tooling engineer and generator jumper. He was a member of the American Legion since 1972, a life member of the VFW, a member of the Johnson County Honor Guard and an endowment member of the NRA. Karl is survived by his wife, Hazel Wittmann, of the home; three sons, Lloyd J Amacher of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Erik B. Wittman and wife Toni of Greenville, North Carolina and James T. Wittmann of Greensboro, North Carolina; stepson, Benjamin Wheeler and wife Sherry of Shady Valley, Tennessee; stepdaughter, Marie Mahala and husband John; step grandson, David Mahala and step granddaughter, Elizabeth Mahala, all of Stoney Creek, Tennessee; sister, Patricia Bullock of Salisbury, North Carolina; brother, Robert R. Wittmann and wife Cami of Carthage, North Carolina; beloved aunts, Ann Shook of Defiance, Ohio, Marjorie Pasturczak of Silvis, Illinois, Veva Foster of Bloomington, Illinois and Mildred Widnar of Dubuque, Iowa. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral Services for Karl will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2004 from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Stidham to officiate. Military Graveside Services and Interment will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2004 from the Fletcher Cemetery, Butler, Tennessee. Active Pallbearers will be the Johnson County Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jarrett "Alf" Wilson, William Arnold, Shane Reece, Gary Reece, Wayne Hicks, Charles Stout, Ray Shatley and Ray Osborne. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, prior to Services at the Funeral Home. Family, Pallbearers and Friends are asked to assemble by 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Funeral Home to go in procession to the Cemetery. At other times, friends may call at the residence.
