Kate Greenwell Culver, age 83, of Butler, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2008 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following a brief illness. Kate was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ruth Baird Greenwell. She retired from the Blue Ridge Shoe Factory in 1985. She has been a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church since 1937. She was a graduate of the Watauga Academy in Old Butler, which is currently under the Watauga Lake. She and her husband of 66 years were forced to move from their home in Old Butler in 1948 due to the building of the Watauga Dam. Tom and Kate built their new home on Dry Hill Road, where they lived for the next 60 years as a loving couple raising their children and having many wonderful Sunday gatherings for their family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, James Emmert and a nephew, Jimmy Emmert.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Culver; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Susie Culver, Boone, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bobby Mills, Butler, TN; Grandsons: Tom (Becky) Culver, Butler, TN, David (Kristi) Culver, Boone, NC; Great Grandchildren: Madison, Braxton and Alex Culver, Boone, NC. Her sister, Minnie Emmert; Nephews: Dick and Mike Emmert; Nieces: Greer Murphy, Tammy Miller; Grand Nieces: Michelle, Robin, Wendy, Julie, Shannon, Audrey, Jessica and Gabriel.
Funeral services for Kate Greenwell Culver will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Ranshaw and Rev. Ray Greene officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2008 in the Sugar Grove Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Culver, David Culver, Mike Emmert, Bob Murphy, Mack Holloway, and Richard Dugger. Honorary pallbearers will be Ellis Wolfe, Carter Isaacs, Harvey Fowler, Lawrence Pearson, Earl Dugger, Walter Norris, Jim Greenwell, Members of Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Dr. Jonathan Bremer, and Director’s of Johnson County Fire Insurance. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral service.
