Katie Johnson, age 68, of 915 Ben Bolen Road, Creston, NC, formerly of 176 Claude Johnson Lane, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2008 in Watauga Medical Center, Boone, North Carolina following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Wesley Sluder and Mae Phillips Sluder. Ms. Johnson was retired from Thomasville Furniture and she was a member of Sutherland Baptist Church. Her hobbies included collecting owls. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Johnson in 2005; two sisters: Vada Lewis and Hazel Neal; four brothers: Paul Sluder, Bircha Sluder, Hiram Sluder and Aster Sluder; and special friend Bettie Moose.

 

Survivors include: one daughter: Linda Canter and husband Carter of Creston, NC; one brother: J.B. Sluder of Lenoir, NC; two grandchildren: Heather Canter of West Jefferson, NC and Allison Canter of Creston, NC; a special nephew, Gary Woodard, of Mountain City, TN that she thought of as a son; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Katie Johnson will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie McCoy, Rev. Lloyd Day, Rev. Denton Hart and Rev. Ambrose Jones officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Johnny Calloway, Robert Campbell, Tommy Lewis, Sam Lewis, Ronnie Woodard and Jamie Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Alvin Sluder, Dr. John Whitlock, David Hartsog and Jimmy Dale Johnson. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2008 in the Eastside Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home.

 

At other times friends may call at the home of her daughter, Linda Canter, 915 Ben Bolen Road, Creston, NC 28615.
