Mattie Lee Harris, Perkins, Combs, age 95 of Malvern, PA, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2005. Mattie was born in Creston, N.C. (Ashe County) on August 10, 1909 to the late Winfield Kelly "Dock" and Amanda Elizabeth Gilley Harris. She grew up in Creston on Three Top Road and had made her home in Mountain City, TN around 1959 until 1997, when she sold her farm and moved to Malvern, PA. Mattie had three sisters, whom preceded her in death: Harriet "Hattie" Harris Milam Shoemaker, Gladys Harris Gantt, both of CA and Tiny Pearl Harris, who passed away in 1902 as a young child. Mattie had seven children with her first husband, Mason Leonard Perkins of Toliver, N.C: Betty Jean Perkins Humphrey Banz of MD, Pauline Perkins Martin (deceased) of VA, Josephine Perkins Williams Darce' (deceased) and husband Roland of TX, William G. "Bill" Perkins and wife Connie of OH, Clay Perkins and wife Virginia of FL, Winfield K. Perkins (infant son, deceased) and Edna Elizabeth Perkins Barker Latham and husband Roy of PA. Mattie had 32 grandchildren: Clara Jewel Humphrey Beatty (Chester) Janis Lee Humphrey Wiley (Lawrence) both of MD John F. Humphrey Jr of TX Judy M. Humphrey Siwinski (Arthur) Jennifer G. Humphrey Mateycik (Joseph) Jeffrey W. Humphrey (Naomi), all of MD James W. Perkins (Kim) John M. Martin (deceased) and wife Mary Ann James M. Martin (Sharon) Thelma F. Martin Mansourzadeh (Jay) Ellen J. Martin Karnes (Forrest), all of VA Linda L. Williams Harder (Daniel) of MN Robert S. Williams (deceased) and wife Patricia Phillip A. Darce' (Sharon) David J. Darce' (Sharee), all of TX Chad Harris Darce' (Mickey) of MS William M. Perkins (Kathy) of OH Mitchell H. Perkins (Eileen) of NC Timothy L. Perkins (Heidi) Mason G. Perkins (Deborah) Connie Lynn Perkins (Gary) all of OH James M. Perkins (Lorie) of NC James G. Barker (Alicia) Terry L. Barker Olimpi (Stephen) Kathy Barker Mullin (Richard) Link G. Latham (Pamela) Aimee E. Latham Long (Joseph), all of PA Carl H. Perkins (Kathy) of FL Mark R. Perkins (Shirley, deceased) of MD Elizabeth Faye Perkins (deceased), MD Chris W. Perkins (Charlotte) Heather L. Perkins Sterling (Glennardo) all of FL 73 Great Grandchildren, 49 Great-Great Grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. In 2004, Mattie welcomed the arrival of her 6th generation, Landon Medicus of MD. Mattie loved Mountain City, TN and Ashe County, NC and all of her friends there. Her biggest disappointment was that all of her friends had passed on and she did not know too many of the younger ones, and that saddened her. Mattie was a very hard worker, as well as her husband Walter J. Combs. They had a small farm at 128 Corner Road, Mountain City, TN off of Hwy 421 in Johnson County. They would sell sell milk and butter to their friends and neighbors. Mattie was a homemaker and she loved cooking, gardening, sewing, canning, traveling and visiting friends, relatives and children. She was also an avid reader and had read thousands of books during her lifetime. Mattie was a member of the Valley View Methodist Church of Mountain City, TN. Funeral Services for Mattie will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005 from the Hux-Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Everhart to officiate. The family will receive friends 2-3:00 p.m. prior to Services at the Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside Services and Interment will follow from the Phillippi Cemetery, Mountain City, Tennessee, where Mattie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Walter J. Combs, who passed away in 1995. Walter and Mattie were married on April 9, 1935. Pallbearers will be Family and Friends of Mattie.
