Nelle S. Butler age 73 of 844 Dogwood Circle, Mountain City, TN, passed away on August 28, 2005 and went to be with the Lord following a brief illness. Mrs. Butler was born on May 22, 1932 to the late Selmer and Stella Simcox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Thomas Butler and in-laws Walter and Freddie Butler. Mrs. Butler spent most of her life as a resident of Johnson County with a short stint in Bainbridge, MD. Surviving are two daughters Debora B. Hansen and husband Richard Hansen of Alexandria, VA and Sandra B. Brooks and husband Keith Brooks of Franklin, NC. Mrs. Butler was a member of the Johnson County High School Class of 1950. During her high school years, she was voted as a "Bean Festival Queen". Her government career began as a civilian in support of the Navy in 1955 to include serving the Security Officer for the Raytheon Corporation in Bristol, TN, culminating as an auditor for the United States Department of Agriculture. She owned and operator S&D School of Music and Dance. Mrs. Butler was a member of First Christian Church of Mountain City where she was an avid supporter of youth activities. She was a member of the Johnson County Republican Party and the Sullivan County Republican Women's Club. Nelle enjoyed supporting local, State and National political issues and campaigns. Some of the candidates that Mrs. Butler supported are: Senator Bill Frist, Former Governor and Senator Lamar Alexander, Former Senator's Howard H. Baker Jr., William Brock and Fred Thompson, Governor Don Sunquist, The Late Congressman James H. Quillen and Congressman William Jenkins,Former State Senator J. Ronie Greer, State Senator Ron Ramsey, Captain Travis Neal Kerney, Current State Legislator Jason Mumpower. She attended Presidential Inaugurations for Presidents Richard M. Nixon, Ronald W. Reagan and George H.W. Bush. The family of Mrs. Nelle S. Butler will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Mountain City, TN on Thursday, September 1, 2005 with Funeral Service to follow at 8 p.m. from the Church Sanctuary with Mr. Mike Smith, Mr. Richard Moorehouse and Mr. Jim Hutchinson to officiate. Guest Speakers will be: Captian Neal Kerney, CDR, 776th MTCO Elizabethton and Mountain City 2/278 ACR Rear OIC Kingsport; The Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Tennessee and Mountain City Mayor Harvey Burniston. Music will be under the direction of: Mrs. Betty Cook and The Franklin High School B-Natural Honor Choral Ensemble. Soloist will be: Mr. Brent Ledford and Mr. Fred Ramsey. The Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2nd from the Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be: David Arnold, Keith Brooks, Buster Brown, Mayor Harvey Burniston, Dr. Bruce Ehlert, Johnson County Sheriff, Roger Gentry, The Honorable Ronnie Greer, Richard Hansen, Former State Legislator Barton Hawkins, Ronnie Henson, Captain Travis Neal Kerney and Bob Stansberry. Honorary Pallbearers are: Ross Arnold, William Boyd, Jack Cress, The Honorable Bliss Hawkins, Lawrence Keeble, Bobby Lowe, Eric Miller, Bobby Hugh Morrison and Delmer Simcox.
