, 2009 after a brief illness. He was a proud veteran, having served as a sergeant in the U. S. Army Military Intelligence Branch for four years. Richie was a man of many talents and interests including woodworking, politics, music, Dungeon and Dragons and martial arts. He was a loyal friend and beloved by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. Richie leaves behind the light of his life and one of his proudest accomplishments, his precious daughter Maison Garland. His presence in our lives will be missed greatly for many years to come.
Richie is survived by his wife, Wanda Garland, of Johnson City, TN; his daughter, Maison Michala Garland, and her mother, Elizabeth Smith Broyhill, both of Elkin, NC; his mother and stepfather, Margo and Gerry Greenwell, and sister, Margo-Ann Greenwell, all of Gray, TN; brother, Ragan Garland, of Mountain City, TN; beloved cousin, Martha Louise Werner, of MA; uncle and aunt, Marshall and Virginia Dugger, of Elizabethton, TN. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Edith and Truman Potter; aunt and uncle, Judy and Loren Garland; aunt, Debbie Garland; and aunt, Loretta Laws, along with many more relatives, including Kerry Glenn Gentry and family.
He has joined in heaven his loving grandmother, Verdie Dugger, who was one of the greatest influences on his life; along with grandfather, Wilson Franklin Dugger; father Danny Curtis Garland; beloved grandmother Velma Gentry; and great-grandparents, Richard and Minnie Hawkins.
Richard was very important in the lives of many friends, including Dan Potter, John Street, cousins Glenn and Dwayne McKinney, all of Elizabethton, TN; Chris Herman of Church Hill, TN; Kenneth and Rose Boyd and Josh Mays of Mountain City, TN. He touched the lives of so many more people that it is impossible to mention them all.
Funeral services for Richard (Richie) Garland will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux~Lipford~Teague Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Stidham and Rev. Russell Ward officiating. Military Graveside Service will follow in Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Glen McKinney, Justin Garland, Dan Potter, Brian “Oz” Ward, Chris Herman and John Street. Honorary pallbearers will be Loren Garland, Everette Garland, Truman Potter, Ragan Garland, Gerry Greenwell, Kenny Boyd and Mike Bush. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
