Richard Harrison Main, age 80, of 920 Avery Branch Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on July 31, 1925 in Binghamton, New York to the late Howard and Sylvia (Sherman) Main. Richard served four years in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the destroyer escort USS Diachenko a ship fitter receiving various medals and ribbons. Richard was a member of Masonic Lodge #970 of Johnson City, New York. He worked for 41 years for IBM Corporation in Endicott, New York and Boca Raton, Florida. In 1994, Richard and his wife, Jean, moved to Mountain City, Tennessee, a town that he considered to be God's country, and enjoyed having his home built by Bill Allen and Donnie Robinson and others. Richard loved working in his vegetable garden, listening to country music at the Community Center, Sugar Creek Community and the Crackers Neck Community. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends, neighbors and family, camping, fishing, hunting and was an avid football and baseball fan. He also enjoyed the visits from Rev. Larry Rye of the First United Methodist Church. Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean (Lawton) Main, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Bradley C. and Cynthia Main of Endwell, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Pamela and Edson Howlett III of Deerfield Beach, FL and Vickie and Peter Kondras of Mountain City, TN; seven grandchildren: Brian Main of Lexington, KY, Niccole (Main) Chisholm, Heather Main, both of Binghamton, N.Y., Edson Howlett IV. and special friend Mary Ann Brown, both of Pompano Beach, FL, Erika (Howlett) and husband Dominic Perri, Jennifer Howlett and Valerie Howlett, all of Deerfield Beach, FL; six great grandchildren: Taylor Chisholm, Dylan Chisholm, Jaden Main, all of Binghamton, N.Y., Joslyn Brown, Aubrey Howlett, both of Pompano Beach, FL and Dylan Perri of Deerfield Beach, FL; sister, Helen (Main) Tuckey of Endicott, NY; nephews: James Tuckey and wife/family of Lisle, NY and Richard Tuckey and wife/family of St. Lawrence, N.Y.; niece, Sylvia Courtright and husband/family of Binghamton, N.Y.; brother-in-law: Ronald Lawton and wife Patricia of Mountain City, TN; special friends: Bob and Corrine Yager of Albemarle, N.C. and David Ostroski of Mountain City, TN and Rev. Larry Rye; special caregivers: Willie Dickens and Marilyn Uhl along with his beloved Bassett Hound, Dolly, and many special neighbors and friends in Mountain City, TN and in the Binghamton, N.Y. area. A special thank-you to the Johnson County Home Health Staff and Nurses-Angie, Tina, Christy, Vickie, Michelle, and Connie, Members of the Johnson County Rescue Squad, Associates of the Mountain City Care and Rehab Center and Mountain City Pharmacy and Home Health Medial Equipment and Staff. Richard requested that there be no services.
