Stella Payne Simcox, age 89, of 733 North Church Street, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Virginia, following a brief illness. A native of Shouns, Tennessee, she was born July 14, 1914 to the late D.M. and Dona Jones Payne. Stella was a former associate of the Ramsey Five and Dime Store and of the City Shoe Store. She was also a former member of the Johnson County Garden Club and of the Johnson County Republican Party. Stella was a member of First Christian Church and a former Sunday School Teacher at Hammons Chapel Christian Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, flowers and horses. In addition to her parents, Stella was preceded in death by her husband Selmer W. Simcox, who passed away May 19, 1999, one son; Martin Simcox and one brother Clay Payne. She is survived by two daughters; Nelle Simcox Butler of Mountain City and Frankie Simcox Wilson of Wilkesboro, North Carolina, three sisters; Bonnie Owens, Della Vanover, both of Mountain City and Blanche Greer of Pennsylvania, two brothers; Jim Payne and Elmer Payne both of Mountain City, five grandchildren; Debora Butler Hansen and husband Richard of Alexandria, Virginia, Sandra Butler Brooks and husband Keith of Franklin, North Carolina, David Wilson of Asheville, North Carolina, Hal Wilson III of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina and Becky Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Stella will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004 from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Mike Smith to officiate. Family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. prior to services at the Chapel. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2004 from the Sunset Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be: Bliss Hawkins, John Stout, Barton Hawkins, Bobby Lowe, Fred Ramsey and Ronnie Henson. Honorary Pallbearers are: Wilber Boyd, Delmer Simcox, John Simcox, Jack Greer, Ralph Jenkins, Jack Cress, Buster Brown, Billy Brown, Harvey Burniston, Robert Hugh Morrison, Roger Gentry, Dr. Ell, D.C. Pierce and Paul Gobble. At other times, friends may call at the residence of Nelle S. Butler, 884 Dogwood Street, Mountain City, Tennessee Those who plan to attend the Graveside Services Saturday are asked to meet at Hux-Lipford Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. to go in procession.
