Verlene Martin, age 84, of 557 Antioch Road, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 in the Watauga Medical Center, Boone, NC. She was a homemaker, enjoyed sewing and reading her Bible. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church. She was born November 4, 1928 in Johnson County, Tennessee, and was a daughter of the late Clyde Jennings and Mae Belle Cornett Jennings. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Martin, daughter, Evelyn Sue Martin, brothers, Oscar Jennings, Geter Jennings, Sonny Jennings, Howard Jennings and Ralph Jennings and a son-in-law, Danny Rhymer. Survivors include: Two daughters: Phyllis Reece and husband Tom and Shirley Rhymer; Two sons: Rudd R. Martin, Jr. and wife Wanda, and Ronald Martin all of Mountain City, TN. Grandchildren: Jim Reece and wife Teresa, Jeff Reece and wife Vickie, Steve Rhymer and wife Kellena, Beverly Osborne and husband Charlie and Karen Pena and husband Jesse. Great grandchildren: Raven Bennett, Samantha Reece, Dalton Reece and Chloe Rhymer. Seven brothers: Dewey Jennings, West Grove, Pa, Benard Jennings, Mountain City, TN, James Jennings, Fort Myers, Fla, Barney Jennings, Perry Jennings, Tony Jennings and Butch Jennings all of Mountain City, TN. Two sisters: Nora Mae Swift of Texas and Evelyn Farmer, Mountain City, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Special friends are: Kay Atwood and Andra Martin. Funeral services for Verlene Martin will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Poe Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Jim Reece, Jeff Reece, Rhonda Reece, Steve Rhymer, Charlie Osborne, Jesse Pena, Mike Farmer, Selmer Potter and Buster May. Honorary pallbearer will be Mr. Jim Hutchinson. At other times friends may call at the residence of a daughter, Shirley Rhymer, 2545 Crackers Neck Road, Mountain City, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 207 North Boone Street, Johnson City, TN. 37604.
