Wiley Gresham Lowe, age 70, of 125 Georgia Street, passed away Monday, October 27, 2003 at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, North Carolina following an extended illness. A native of Johnson County, Mr. Lowe retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1974 after twenty-two years of service. He returned to Mountain City with his family and later retired as Director of Environmental Services at Watauga Medical Center. He was an avid outdoorsman, reader and fan of the UT Volunteers. He served one term as County Commissioner in Johnson County and was formerly Adjutant with the American Legion, Post 61. Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lowe and later, Reba Lona Lowe Greene and one brother; John Carter Lowe. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Lowe of the home, two sons; Eddie Lowe of Johnson City, Tennessee and J.C. "Chuck" Lowe of Washington, D.C., two grandchildren; Joshua and Aidan, one sister; Mary Ann Worley and her two sons; Clyde and Thomas and one sister-in-law; Carol Lowe. Funeral Services for Mr. Lowe will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2003 from the First United Methodist Church of Mountain City with Rev. Margaret Owens Yates to officiate. Graveside Services will follow at the Shouns-McEwen Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be the Johnson County Honor Guard and Harvey Burniston. Honorary pallbearers will be H.R. Long, Mike Long, Lew Silver, Herbert Joines, Tommy Worley, Carter Isaacs, Bill Brookshire, Loyd McEwen, Eddie Rhymer, Rick Bellamy, David Pennington and Porter Stout. The family will receive friends at the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home from 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Johnson County Honor Guard.
